Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a highly pure and effective agricultural chemical or its raw material, effectively, by the reaction of a substituted isopropenylphenol with an organic halide and then with a peroxide in the presenec of an acid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A substituted isopropenylphenol expressed by formula I (R is H, halogen or lower alkyl) is reacted with an organic halide expressed by the formula Ar-X [Ar is formula II or III (X1 is H, CF3, halogen, etc.; X2 is H, halogen, cyane, etc.), etc.; X is halogen],e.g. 4-chlorobenzotrifuloride, in the presence of a base, preferably in a solvent, at 140W145°C, for 10W20hr, to prepare a substituted isopropenylbenzene, which is further reacted with a peroxide expressed by the formula R1OOH (R1 is H or alkyl) e.g. H2O2, in the presence of an acid catalyst, preferably in a solvent, at a temperature at which the decomposition of the occurs, or below, for a time corresponding to the reaction temperature, to give a substituted phenol expressed by formula V.
