Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compounds, in high purity, efficiently, by three-step processes comprising the reaction of 4-methyl-2,4-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)pent-1-ene with an organic halide, the thermal decomposition of the reaction product, and the reaction with a peroxide.
CONSTITUTION: 4-Methyl-2,4-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)pent-1-ene of formula I and an organic halide of formula R-X [R is formula II (X1 is H, CF3, halogen, etc.; X2 is H, halogen, cyano, etc.), formula III, etc.; X is halogen] are reacted in the presence of a base, to form 4-methyl-2,4-bis(p-substituted)pent-1-ene of formula IV (the first process). The obtained product of formula IV is thermally decomposed, to give 4- substituted-isopropenylbenzene of formula V (the second process), which is reacted with a peroxide of formula R1OOH (R1 is H, lower alkyl, etc.) in the presence of an acid catalyst, to give the desired compound of formula VI (the third process).
