Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepar the titled compound useful as a precursor of penicillin G, an ingredient of perfumery, and intermediate of dyes, pesticides and pharmaceuticals, by subjecting the reaction product of chlorotoluene and metallic sodium to thermal rearrangement, and reacting the product with chloroformic acid alkyl ester.
CONSTITUTION: Chlorotoluene is made to react with metallic sodium dispersed in an inert organic solvent, at 10W40°C for 0.5W1hr, and then heated at 50W 120°C for 3W7hr to effect the rearrangement of the produced tolyl sodium to benzyl sodium. A formic acid alkyl ester is added to the product, and made to react at 10W30°C to obtain the objective compound. Since the objective phenylacetic acid alkyl ester can be obtained even by using a mixed chlorotoluene containing o- and p-isomers, a crude chlorotoluene obtained by the chlorination of toluene can be directly used as the raw material.
