Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:An optically active or racemic aminal derivative of formula I (A and B are aryl).
EXAMPLE: Aminal of phenylglyoxal.
USE: Intermediate of pesticides and medicines.
PROCESS: The compound I is prepared by reacting an arylglyoxal (e.g. phenylglyoxal) with an optically active or racemic 2-(N-substituted aminomethyl)pyrrolidine [e.g. 2-(anilinomethyl)pyrrolidine], in an organic solvent such as benzene, at a temperature below the boiling point of the solvent. The reaction proceeds more rapidly at higher temperature. It is preferable to remove the produced water by azeotoropic distillation with benzene or toluene. The compound I can be converted to an optically active α-hydroxyaldehyde in high optical yeild, by reacting with a Grignard reagent followed by hydrolysis.
