Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the tile compound or its lactone, useful as an intermediate of medicines or perfumery, economically, by reacting the racemic body of γ-hydroxynonanoic acid with a specific optically active amine to form a diastereomer salt, followed by fractionation, recrystallization and decomposition of the salt.
CONSTITUTION: A racemic body of γ-hydroxynonanoic acid of formula is reacted with an optically active amine selected from optically active α-(1-naphthyl)ethylamine, α-phenylethylamine, and β-(p-tolyl)-α-phenylethylamine, to form a diastereomer salt. The salt is then fractionated and recrystallized with a solvent, and decomposed to obtain the optically active γ-hydroxynonanoic acid, which can be converted to optically active γ-nonalactone by dehydration.
