Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title isovaleric acid derivative having excellent insecticidal activity as the acid component of a pyrethroid insecticide and having a high optical purity, by reacting a substituted isovaleric acid with an optically active organic base, and resolving the products taking advantage of the solubility difference.
CONSTITUTION: A substituted isovaleric acid I (R is 1W6C lower alkyl), e.g. (±)- α-isobutoxyisovaleric acid, etc., is reacted with (-)-isomer of an optically active organic base II (R1 and R2 are H or lower alkyl), e.g. (-)-α-benzyl-p-methylbenzylamine, etc., to give the salt. The crystal of the (-)-amine salt of the (+)- substituted isovaleric acid is obtained from the salt by using an organic solvent, e.g. benzene, ethyl acetate, etc. The crystal is decomposed with an alkali or a strong acid and extracted with an organic solvent. The water layer is decomposed with an acid or an alkali and extracted with an organic solvent to give the optically active substituted isovaleric acid, e.g. (+)-α-isobutoxyisovaleric acid, etc.
