Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an optically active alcohol compound useful as a synthetic intermediate of pharmaceuticals, etc., in high purity and yield, by reducing a ketone compound with a novel optically active borane compound having excellent stability and solubility.
CONSTITUTION: The optically active alcohol compound of formula III (R4 and R5 are alkyl or aryl) is prepared by reducing the compound of formula II using the optically active borane compound of formulaI[R1 is lower alkyl or aralkyl; R2 and R3 are H, lower alkyl or aralkyl, or R1 and R2 may together form (CH2)n (n is 3 or 4)]as the reducing agent. The reaction is carried out in a solvent such as THF at -30W+30°C. The compound of formulaIis novel, and can be prepared as a stable complex e.g. by reacting the optically active β-aminoalcohol of formula IV with borane, and removing the excess borane from the system.
