Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound useful as a cationic surfactant, a cationic dye, a phase transfer catalyst, etc., in high yield, by reacting tributylamine with benzyl chloride using easily recoverable chloroform as the reaction solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Benzyltributylammonium chloride is prepared by reacting (A) tributylamine with (B) benzyl chloride using (C) cloroform as reaction solvent. The amount of (B) component is slightly excees to the equivalent of (A), and the molar ratio of (C) to (A)+(B) is about 2-3 to 1. The chloroform can be recovered with a recovery of as high as 95%, by distillation or azeotropic distillation with water.
EFFECT: Homogenous reaction system. Decomposition of benzyl chloride does not take place.
USE: Especially useful as a catalyst for the production of medicines, pesticides, etc.
