Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover heteropoly-acid as a catalyst at a high yield by adding a specified organic medium and water to a distilled residue after isopropyl acetate produced is separated from a reaction liquid.
CONSTITUTION: When propylene is reacted with acetic acid in the liquid phase to produce isopropyl acetate, unreacted acetic acid, products, heteropoly-acid, a small amount of high boiling point byproducts exist in the reaction liquid. After the removal of the products, when an organic medium which dissolves in the high- boiling-point by products but not mixed with water hence separable from the liquid phase even in the presence of acetic acid and water are added to the distilled residue to separate the mixture into two phases, the high-boiling-point byproducts are shifted to an organic phase while the heteropoly-acid as catalyst to a liquid phase. This enables recovery of expensive heteropoly-acid at a high yield.
