Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound, useful as a solvent for acrylic resin paint, etc., continuously, by reacting ethyl acetate with an excess amount of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, and recovering and recycling the starting materials from the reaction mixture using specific distillation processes.
CONSTITUTION: Ethyl acetate, an excess molar amount of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, and recovered glycol are supplied into a feed tank A, and made to react in a reaction vessel B at ≤100°C in the presence of a strong acidic catalyst. The reaction mixture is distilled in a first distillation column C to recover a part of the ethyl acetate and ethanol from the top 4 as an azeotropic mixture. The solution obtained from the bottom 5 of the column is distilled in a second distillation column D to recover ethanol from the intermediate stage 7. The objective ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate is obtained from the bottom 8 of the column D.
