Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound, useful as, e.g. a solvent for acrylic resin paint, by reacting ethyl acetate with an excess amount of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, effectively separating and recovering the unreacted materials and the objective compound successively from the reaction mixture, and recycling the unreacted materials to the reaction system.
CONSTITUTION: Ethyl acetate, more than equimolar amount of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, and recovered ethanol are supplied into a feed tank A, and made to react in a reaction vessel B in the presence of a strong acidic cation exchange resin catalyst. The reaction mixture is distilled in a first distillation column C to recover the unreacted ethyl acetate and ethanol from the top 5 thereof. Then the bottom is distilled in a second distillation column D to recover ethanol from the top of the column. Again, the bottom from the column D is distilled in a third distillation column E to recover ethylene glycol monoethyl ether from the top, and the objective ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate from the bottom of the distillation column E.
