Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound, useful as a solvent of resins and paints, and an alkylating agent, etc., in high selectivity and yield, under mild conditions, by reacting an alkylene carbonate with an aliphatic alcohol in the presence of a phosphine compound as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The title compound is prepared by reacting (A) an alkylene carbonate (e.g. ethylene carbonate) with (B) pref. 1W20 moles, based on 1 mole of (A), of an aliphatic alcohol (pref. 1W10C alcohol such as methanol and benzyl alcohol), in the presence of (C) pref. 0.5W20wt%, based on the raw materials, of a phosphine compound (e.g. methyl phosphine), in the absence or presence of an inert solvent such as benzene, at 50W150°C.
