Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound in high selectivity and yield, by reacting a phenolic compound with acetaldehyde or its derivative in a reaction system containing specific amount of water added to the system before reaction.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of a bisphenolethane compound by the reaction of a phenolic compound with acetaldehyde or its derivative in the presence of an acid catalyst, a specific amount of water is added to the reaction system before reaction. The amount of water is about 5W400pts.wt., esp. about 5W200pts.wt. per 100pts.wt. of the sum of the phenolic compound and the acetaldehyde or its derivative. When a reaction solvent is used together with the added water, the weight ratio of the sum of water and the reaction solvent to the sum of the phenolic compound and acetaldehyde or its derivative is pref. about 100/5W100/500, esp. 100/5W100/200.
