Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound relatively simply in high yields and selectivity through one step reaction, by reacting resorcinol with an alkylating agent in an inert solvent, using phosphoric acid with a specific concentration.
CONSTITUTION: Resorcinol is reacted with an alkylating agent selected from the group consisting of tertiary butyl alcohol, isobutyl alcohol and isobutylene in an inert sulvent, e.g., toluene, xylene, in the presence of phosphoric acid with an initial concentration of 50W65wt%, preferably 55W63wt%, desirably at 50W100°C for 3W6hr to give the desired compound. The amount of phosphoric acid based on resorcinol is not less than 80wt%, preferably 150W400wt%, and the amount of the alkylating agent is 1.0W1.35 times the molar amount of resorcinol. The amount of the solvent is preferably 1W10 times as much as resorcinol.
