Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compounds useful as an intermediate for agricultural chemicals, medicines, etc., in high yield, by reacting diphenylamines with a 4W12C hydrocarbon having one ethylene linkage in the molecule, in the presence of specific catalysts.
CONSTITUTION: Diphenylamines, e.g. octyldiphenylamine, of the formula (R1 and R2 are H or 1W12C alkyl) are alkylated with a 4W12C aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. isobutylene or styrene, having one ethylene linkage in the molecule in the presence of preferably 0.1W100wt% based on the diphenylamines of an aluminum halogenide and preferably 0.1mol or more per mole of the aluminum halogenide of a 1W8C alcohol, e.g. methanol, as catalysts at -10W300°C.
