Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as a raw material for synthesis or various organic compounds in high yield at low cost, by selective nuclear methylation of resorcin with methanol in the presence of an ammonium halide.
CONSTITUTION: 100 parts by wt. of resorcinol is reacted with methanol in the presence of 0.01W100 parts by wt. of an ammonium halide, e.g. ammonium chloride, in the liquid phase at 300W400°C for 1W10 hr to give 2,6-dihydroxytoluene. The methanol is used in an amount excess of the stoichiometric one, preferably to serve as a medium, for selective muclear methylation of various aromatic dihydroxy compounds.
USE: 2,6-Diaminotoluene which is a raw matenial for pigments.
