Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound, an intermediate of pharmaceuticals and pesticides, in high yield, by the reaction of an α-bromocarboxylic acid with a thionyl halide, using N,N-dimethylformamide, N,N-dimethylacetamide, etc. as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The titled compound is obtained by the reaction of an α-bromocarboxylic acid of formula (R is 1W4C alkyl) with a thionyl halide, e.g. thionyl chloride or thionyl bromide, at 30W90°C in the presence of a catalyst comprising one or more electron-donating compounds, e.g. N,N-dimethylformamide, N,N- dimethylacetamide, N,N-diethylacetamide, N,N-diethylformamide, pyridine, etc. The amount of the above catalyst is preferably 0.05W5wt% of the starting material α-bromocarboxylic acid, and that of the thionyl halide is preferably 1.0W1.5 times mol.
