Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare indole or its derivative, with low production of by-products, in one step and in high selectivity, by the gas phase reaction of aniline (an inexpensive starting material) with a glycol in the presence of a catalyst containing cadmium chloride or zinc chloride.
CONSTITUTION: Indole or an indole-derivative is prepared by the gas phase reaction of aniline with a 1,2-glycol of formula (R1WR4 are H, 1W4C alkyl which may be substituted with OH, halogen or CN) in the presence of a catalyst containing cadmium chloride and/or zinc chloride at 200W500°C. The catalyst may be cadmium chloride, zinc chloride, their mixture, or a mixture of each compound with other compounds (e.g. NaCl, KCl, etc.).
