Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound in one step, in high selectivity, by the gasphase reaction of N-β-hydroxyethylaniline or its nucleus-substituted derivative using a low cost catalyst containing cadmium chloride, cadmium sulfate, zinc chloride or zinc sulfate.
CONSTITUTION: Indole or its derivative is prepared by the gas-phase reaction of N-β-hydroxyethylaniline available at a low cost or its nucleus-substituted derivative (e.g. N-β-hydroxyethyl-o-toluidine) using a catalyst containing cadmium chlroide, cadmium sulfate, zinc chloride or zinc sulfate. Addition of ethylene glycol aniline to the reaction system improves the yield. The amount of ethylene glycol and aniline are 0.01W10mol and 1W20mol par 1mol of the raw material, respectively. The compounds of the catalyst may be used singly, as their mixture, as a mixture with other compounds (e.g. halide, nitrate, etc. of Li, Na, etc.) or supported on a carrier.
