Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare lower hydrocarbons, especially ethylene and propylene, in high selectivity, by reacting methanol and/or dimethyl ether using a heteropolyacid salt having bulky counter ions, as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Lower hydrocarbons are prepared by reacting methanol and/or dimethyl ether in the presence of a catalyst comprising a heteropolyacid sald having bulky counter ions, at 100W500°C, preferably, 200W350°C. The heteropolyacid salt having bulky counter ions is a salt of an organic base such as an aromatic amine (e.g. pyrazine) and a hetero-polyacid.
