Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a high purity tert-alcohol and isoolefin, by treating a glycol mono-tert-alkyl ether with water in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin under specific reaction conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A glycol mono-tert-alkyl ether of formula I [R1 is methyl, ethyl or propyl; R2 is 2W14C alkylene; (n) is an integer of 1W10; the carbon number of -(R2-O)n is 2W30 ] is treated with water to obtain a tert-alcohol of formula II and an isoolefin of formula III. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin as a catalyst, at 20W140°C, pref. 30W100°C, unde an absolute pressure of 1W70kg/cm2, pref. 1W20kg/cm2. The molar ratio of water to the compound of formula I is (0.05W40) to 1. There is essentially no by-production of isoolefin oligomers, and no by-production of sec-alcohols.
