Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound in high yield, by reacting ethylene glycol with isobutylene in the presence of ethylene glycol ditertiary butyl ether at a temperature in a specific range.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylene glycol (A) is reacted with isobutylene (B) in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin, e.g. Amberlite 15, and about 10mol% or more, preferably 30W80mol%, based on whichever smaller number of moles of (A) or (B), of ethylene glycol ditertiary butyl ether (C) at 60W130°C, preferably 85W110°C, to give the title compound. The molar ratio of (A) to (B) is preferably 1:0.1W10.
EFFECT: The addition of (C) inhibits its formation as a by-product.
USE: Solvents, dispersing agents, and diluents in coating materials and inks.
