Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound, an intermediate for the synthesis of pesticides, readly and safely without forming by-products, by heating a specific compound, prepared through reaction between 2-methylbutene-2 and formaldehyde easily, in an aqueous inorganic strong acid.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of the formula (W and Y are H; X and Z are OH, Cl, Br, HSO4, H2PO4, etc.; or either of W and Y is H, and the other forms a single bond with X; Z is OH, Cl, Br, HSO4, H2PO4, etc.) is heated in an aqueous inorganic strong acid, e.g. hydrochloric, hydrobromic, or sulfuric acid, preferably at 40W200°C, more preferably at 60W150°C, to give the title compound. The acid concentration in the aqueous phase is ≥ 2.0moles/kg, preferably ≥ 2.5moles/kg, and the amount of the acid is 0.1 mole or more, preferably 0.5mole or more per mole of the raw material.
