Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain water repellent silica having high water repellency and not requiring heat treatment especially as after-treatment by reacting SiO2 and an org. Si halide compound in the presence of an org. solvent miscible with water.
CONSTITUTION: SiO2 obtd. preferably by a wet method and an org. Si halide compound such as trimethylmonochlorosilane are reacted in an org. solvent such as methanol or ethanol miscible with water. Water repellent silica thus formed is then separated from the liq. reaction product by filtration, centrifugal separation or other method. The molar ratio of the org. Si halide compound to the SiO2 is 1.0W 1.5, and they are reacted especially preferably at 50°CWthe b.p. of the reaction system for 0.5W2hr.
