Abstract

PURPOSE: A mixture of methoxysilane and unreacted methanol resulting from the reaction between silicon and methanol is subjected to azeotropic distillation to remove rapidly methanol, thus preventing the formation of tetramethoxy silane and producing title compound in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction between silicon or its compound and methanol in the presence of cuprous chloride is conducted in a solvent as cumene. Then, the unreacted methanol is removed by the azeotropic distillation of the reaction mixture containing methoxysilane and methanol to give title compound. The azeotropic distillation is effected by adding a substance that forms an azeotropic mixture with methanol and gives difference in boiling point between trimethoxysilane and the azeotropic mixture by more than 1°C.
