Abstract

PURPOSE: To suppress the formation of the unreacted methanol and to stabilize the title compound, by adding a specific organic phosphorus compound to a reaction mixture comprising trimethoxysilane (T) obtained through the reaction of silicon with methanol.
CONSTITUTION: Silicon (S) is reacted with methanol (M) at a molar ratio of (S) to (M) of 1:1W50 in the presence of a copper catalyst and 0.001W1wt% of a trivalent organic phosphorus compound of R3 1P or the formula [R1 and R2 are alkyl, aryl(oxy), or alkoxy groups; n is an integer 1W4], e.g. trimethylphosphorus or bisdiphenyl-phosphinomethane, to form trimethoxysilane (T).
EFFECT: Suppressed formation of tetramethoxysilane and high yield.
