Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an alkoxysilane, particularly a trialkoxysilane, in high yield and at a high reaction rate, by reacting silicon with an aliphatic alcohol in a solvent in the presence of a copper catalyst and a specific cyclic polyether.
CONSTITUTION: One mole of silicon is reacted with 0.1W50 moles of an aliphatic alcohol in a solvent, e.g. a hydrocarbon, in the presence of 0.0001W0.5 mole of a copper catalyst, e.g. metallic copper or its compound, and one or more types of cyclic polyethers of formula I (R is methylene, ethylene, propylene, 1,2-cyclohexylene, 1,2-phenylene, or 2,3-naphthalene group; n is an integer ≥ 3) in a molar amount of 0.01W10 times that of the copper catalyst at 100W300°C, preferably 150W250°C, to give an alkoxysilane of formula II (R is alkyl group; m is an integer 1W4, particularly 3).
