Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare highly pure hydroquinone in high yield, by separating the reaction mixture prepared by oxidizing p-isopropenylphenol with an oxidizing agent in a solvent in the presence of a strong acid into a water layer and a solvent layer, extracting the water layer with the same solvent as the reaction medium, and recycling the layer as the strong acid.
CONSTITUTION: p-Isopropenylphenol is oxidized with H2O2 or an organic peroxide, e.g. compounds expressed by the formula (R1WR3 are alkyl or aryl), etc., in a polar solvent having low water-solubility and a high boiling point, e.g. octanol, etc., in the presence of a strong acid. The reaction mixture is separated into a water layer and a solvent layer, and hydroquinone is obtained from the latter layer. The water layer is extracted with the same solvent as the reaction medium to eliminate the organic materials, e.g. hydroquinone, etc., existing in the water layer, and thereafter recycled as a part or the whole of the strong acid used in the oxidation reaction.
USE: A photographic developer, an antioxidant for rubbers and a polymerization inhibitor.
