Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound in a stable yield, by oxidation of a p-isopropylphenol solution mixed with a strong acid and an oxidizing agent in a reaction system kept at a specific temperature or higher, continuously at a temperature in a specific range and according to an easy controlling method.
CONSTITUTION: A solution of p-isopropenylphenol (P), a strong acid, e.g. sulfuric acid, and hydrogen peroxide or organic peroxide as an oxidizing agent are mixed in a reaction system at 25°C or higher, and P is oxidized at 28W50°C, preferably at 30W45°C, to obtain hydroquinone by a stable and safe temperature controlling method. A high-boiling slightly water-soluble polar solvent, e.g. heptyl alcohol, is used for forming the solution. An organic peroxide is a compound of the formula (R1WR3 are alkyl or aryl).
USE: A photographic developer, an antioxidant for rubber, and a polymerization inhibitor.
