Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound in stable yield and high purity, by oxidizing p-isopropylphenol in the presence of a strong acid in a specific concentration or higher, with an oxidizing agent in an amount less than equimolar with the raw material, in a specific temperature range.
CONSTITUTION: A solution of p-isopropylphenol (P) in a high-boiling slightly water-soluble polar solvent is oxidized under specific conditions, to obtain the title compound. The solution, a strong acid in a concentration ≥55%, and hydrogen peroxide or organic peroxide (B) kept at a molar ratio of (B)W(P) of smaller than 1, preferably 0.90W0.99:1, especially 0.95W0.99:1, are added and mixed in a reaction system held at 25°C or higher, and oxidized at 28W50°C, preferably 30W 45°C.
EFFECT: Stable and safe temperature control and optimum for continuous processes.
USE: A photographic developer, an antioxidant for rubber, and a polymerization inhibitor.
