Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the desired isomer of the titled compound economically by the oxidative coupling of an orthophthalic acid ester in the presence of an organic palladium salt and a specific amount of 1,10-phenanthroline, etc. under the flow of molecular oxygen-containing gas.
CONSTITUTION: 3,3',4,4'-Biphenyltetracarboxylic acid ester is obtained in high selectivity and yield, by the oxidative coupling of an orthophthalic acid ester (especially orthophthalic acid di-lower-alkyl ester) in the presence of an organic palladium salt (e.g. palladium acetate) and 0.9W4mol, based on 1mol of the palladium salt, of 1,10-phenanthroline and/or α,α'-bipyridyl or their chelate compounds in the pounds in the reaction liquid, under the flow of gas containing molecular oxygen. The isomer obtained above is much more important than the other isomers as an intermediate of a carboxylic acid dianhydride useful as a raw material of an aromatic polyimide.
