Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material monomer for heat-resistant aromatic polyimide in high yield and in high selectivity, by subjecting an o-phthalic acid diester to oxidation coupling in the presence of perchloric acid in the reaction system under a specific condition. CONSTITUTION:An o-phthalic acid diester is heated in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a bivalent palladium salt (e.g. palladium acetate or palladium nitrate), a copper salt and a basic bidentate ligand (e.g. 2,2'-bipyridine) while feeding a molecular oxygen-containing gas to the reaction system to give a biphenyltetracarboxylic acid tetraester. In the operation, 0.5-4mols. based on 1mol. bivalent palladium salt of perchloric acid is added to the reaction system to improve yield and selectivity.
