Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an antioxidant, etc. in high yield, by condensing 1,3-benzodioxol with acetic acid, etc., oxidizing the condensation product in the presence of an organic sulfonic acid catalyst, and hydrolyzing the oxidation product.
CONSTITUTION: Condensation of the compound of formula I with a compound of formula II (A is halogen, OH or OCOCH3) gives the compound of formula III, which is oxidized in the presence of a catalyst comprising an organic sulfonic acid to obtain the compound of formula IV. The oxidation is carried out by using an oxidizing agent comprising an organic peracid obtained by the reaction of an organic acid such as formic acid with H2O2. The weight ratio of the catalyst to the compound of formula III is pref. 1 to 50W20. The objective compound of formula V can be prepared by hydrolyzing the compound of formula IV. The compound of formula V is useful also as an intermeditate of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, etc.
