Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a high purity carbonyl compound, in high efficiency, as the low-boiling component, by oxidizing a 5C alcohol in a specific high-boiling carboxylic acid ester solvent in the presence of a ruthenium oxidation catalyst, and distilling the reaction products.
CONSTITUTION: A 5C primary or secondary alcohol such as cyclopentanol and a ruthenium oxidation catalyst such as ruthenium dioxide are added to a carboxylic acid ester solvent having a boiling point of ≥150°C, perf. ≥160°C, e.g. n-amyl n- valerate, cyclopentyl acetate, etc. A co-oxidizing agent such as sodium hypochlorite is added to the solution, and the 5C alcohol is oxidized to a carbonyl compound under atmospheric or positive pressure at 0W50°C for 0.1W5hr. The reaction product is distilled to obtain the high purity carbonyl compound such as cyclopentanone as a low-boiling component.
