Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate for the preparation of agricultural and horticultural fungicide, easily, in high yield, by the thermal decomposition of an alkoxyketone compound obtained easily from pinacolone and a benzaldehyde analog, in the presence of an acid.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula II (X is H or Cl) is prepared by the thermal decomposition of an alkoxyketone compound of formulaI (R is CH3 or C2H5) at 130W220°C in the presence of 0.01W0.1 mole of an acid (preferably sulfuric acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid) per 1 mole of the compound of formulaI. The stating compound of formulaIcan be prepared by (1) reacting a benzaldehyde analog of formula III with pinacolone in the presence of a base, (2) oxidizing the product to obtain the epoxide of formula IV, and (3) opening the ring of the epoxide with 1,2,4-triazole. Reduction of the compound of formula II yields quantitatively the triazolylvinyl alcohol compound which is a useful fungicide.
