Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a substituted phenylacetohydroxamic acid which is a raw material of a phenylacetic acid compound useful as a nonsteroid antiphlogistic, in high yield under mild conditions, safely, by reacting a substituted acetophenone with ethylene glycol in the presence of thallium (III) ion.
CONSTITUTION: A substituted acetophenone I (R is alkoxy) is reacted with ethylene glycol at an ordinary temperature to 100°C in the presence of thallium (III) ion to give a substituted phenyl acetohydroxamic acid II in high yield without using a skillful technique and danger of explosion under mild conditions. The source of thallium (III) is pref., thallium (III) nitrate, thallium (III) sulfate, etc. and the amount is pref. 1W2 moles per 1 mole of the ketone I.
