Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a solvent in high yield, by the reaction of acetic acid with ethyleneglycolmonoethylether under specific conditions in the presence of a cation exchange resin as a catalyst while eliminating the formed water from the reaction system during the reaction.
CONSTITUTION: Acetic acid is reacted with ethyleneglycolmonoethylether in a molar ratio of 1:1W1:2, at 50W100°C, in the presence of a cation exchange resin as a catalyst while eliminating the formed water from the reaction system. The final conversion ratio of acetic acid is adjusted to 80W97%, to give the titled compound useful as a water-soluble solvent having a high boilding point in a wide field, e.g. a water-soluble acrylic resin coating. The formed water may be eliminated by removing the formed water directly from the reaction system under 760W10mmHg (absolute) or in the presence of an azeotropic agent in the reaction system.
