Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an aldehyde or a ketone in high yield, by oxidation of an alcohol, in the presence of an organoicselenium compound catalyst, with an industrially inexpensive organic hydroperoxide as an oxidizing agent.
CONSTITUTION: An alcohol, e.g. 1-decanol or benzhydrol, is oxidized with an organic hydroperoxide of formula ROOH (R is alkyl or aralkyl), preferably e.g. t-butyl hydroperoxide, as an oxidizing agent, preferably in the presence of organicselenium compound of formula ArSeSeAr' (Ar and Ar' are the same or different aromatic groups), e.g. bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) diselenide, in a catalytic amount of 0.00001W0.99mol equivalent based on the alcohol, at -30W200°C, to obtain an aldehyde, e.g. decanal, or a ketone, e.g. benzophenone.
