Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate of various organic compounds, in high yield, by oxidizing acetone with selenium dioxide at a specific high temperature in a short time at a specific ratio of acetone to selenium dioxide.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound is prepared by oxidizing more than 522pts.wt. of acetone with 100pts.wt. of selenium dioxide at 70W150°C for 2W 120minutes. The selenium dioxide is pref. used as a mixture with acetone or an aqueous solution of acetone, or a solution in water as selenious acid. The amount of water added to the reaction system is pref. ≤1,000pts.wt. per 100pts.wt. of selenium dioxide.
