Abstract

PURPOSE: A novel substituted furan derivative is used as a starting material and the reaction is effected under an acidic condition to produce cyclopentenolone used as an intermediate of agricultural chemical and medicine with simple operations in high yield without environmental troubles.
CONSTITUTION: A furan compound of formula I (R1 is methyl) is reduced to an alcohol, which is made to react with a halide to give a compound of formula II (R2 is alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl). Further, the compound of formula II is made to react with chlorine or bromine to form a novel substituted furan derivative of formula III(n is 5 or less; R3 is alkyl; A is O or S). The furan derivative is used as a starting material and the reaction is effected in a solvent such as water or methanol in the presence of an acid such as sulfuric, acetic or phthalic acid at 0°C to the boiling point to give cyclopentenolone of formula IV.
