Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for insecticides readily, by solvolyzing a specific lactone compound with water or an alcohol.
CONSTITUTION: An optically active lactone compound of formula I is solvolyzed with a compound of formula II (R is H or lower alkyl), preferably in the presence of an acidic catalyst, e.g. oxalic acid, at a temperature in the range of room temperature to the boiling point of the solvent for 30min to 4hr to give optically active cyclopentenolone of formula III readily. The resultant compound of formula III is esterified with various acids mainly chrysanthemic acid to afford powerful insecticides.
