Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the purity and the yield of styrene in the liquid phase dehydration of α-phenylethyl alcohol, by carrying out the reaction in the presence of an organic sulfonic acid as a catalyst, at a specific temperature and a specific concentration of the α-phenylethyl alcohol.
CONSTITUTION: Styrene is produced by the liquid-phase dehydration of α-phenylethyl alcohol (α-PEA). The reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst comprising an organic sulfonic acid or its ester [e.g. methanesulfonic acid (methyl ester), benzene-sulfonic acid (methyl ester), etc.], at 180W240°C under an absolute pressure of ≤650mmHg, while keeping the concentration of the α-PEG below the valve given by the formula (wt%)=2×10-3×(260-t)2 wherein t is reaction temperature (°C).
