Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain styrene useful as a monomer for preparing polymers in high purity and yield, by dehydrating α-phenylethyl alcohol in the liquid phase in the presence of a dehydration catalyst of an organic sulfonic acid at a suitable temperature and pressure.
CONSTITUTION: α-Phenylethyl alcohol is dehydrated in the liquid phase in the presence of an organic sulfonic acid as a catalyst at 180W240°C, preferably 200W 220°C and 650 mm Hg . abs or below through the reaction distillation method to give styrene. As for the sulfonic acid, a substituted benzenesulfonic acid having one or more substituents with a negative Hammett's σ, e.g. p-toluenesulfonic acid, may be preferred.
