Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound which is a raw material for the synthesis of a substituted phenol useful as a raw material for various organic syntheses, in high yield and in high purity, by the thermal decomposition of 4-methyl-2,4-bis(p- substituted-oxyphenyl)pent-1-ene.
CONSTITUTION: The desired compound of formula IV is obtained by the thermal decomposition of 4-methyl-2,4-bis(p-substituted-oxyphenyl)pent-1-ene of formula I[R is formula II (X1 is H, CF3, halogen, cyano, etc.; X2 is H, halogen, cyano or lower alkyl), formula III, etc.] at 180W320°C, preferably 200W290°C. The gas formed by the decomposition is preferably separated from the raw materials and cooled as quickly as possible by using an alumina-packed column to increase the heating area or by absorbing the solvent under low pressure. Substituted phenols can be obtained in high purity and high yield by the reaction of the compound of formula IV with peroxide in the presence of an acid catalyst.
