Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compunds which are useful as raw materials for various organic syntheses, particularly raw materials for the production of agricultural chemicals, in high purity and high yield, by the reaction of 4-substituted-isoprophenylbenzene as a raw material with a peroxide in the presence of an acid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Substituted phenols of formula IV are obtained by reacting 4-substituted isopropenylbenzene of formula I [R is formula II (X1 is h, CF3, halogen, cyano, etc.; X2 is H, cyano, lower alkyl, etc.), formula III, etc.] and a peroxide of formula R1OOH (R1 is H, lower alkyl, substituted alkyl) such as hydrogen peroxide or cumylhydroperoxides in the presence of an acid catalyst below the temprature at which the decomposition of a peroxide used occurs. The peroxide is used in at least an equivalent amount based on the compound of formula I, and the acid catalyst is used in an amount of 0.05W10 moles to 1 mole of the compound of formula I. The raw material of formula I is obtained by the thermal decomposition of 4-methyl-2,4-bis(p-substituted oxydiphenyl)pent-1-ene.
