Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as an intermediate for dyes for pressure-, or heat-sensitive paper in high yield and purity, by reacting a hydroquinone derivative with an o-halogenoaniline in an inorganic phosphoric acid compound and a specific solvent under heating.
CONSTITUTION: One mole of a hydroquinone derivative of formula I: (R is H or lower alkyl group) is reacted with 0.9W2.0 moles of an o-halogenoaniline in the presence of 0.01W1.0 mole of an inorganic phosphoric acid compound, e.g. phosphorous, phosphoric or polyphosphoric acid, in 300W1,000ml of an organic inert solvent, e .g. o-dichlorobenzene or pseudocumene, having a boiling point of 100W 250°C at 100W200°C to give the objective compound of formula III, e.g. 4-hydroxy- 2'-chloro di phenylamine.
EFFECT: A high yield ≥80% and a high purity ≥98% with suppressed dechlorination reaction.
