Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a specific indole for perfumes, while recovering and reusing the by-product amine readily, by ring closure of an easily synthesized N,N'-diarylformamidine with sodium (aryl)amide.
CONSTITUTION: An easily synthesized formamidine of formula I: (R, R1, R2, and R3 are H or 1W6C alkyl group; R4 is H or CH2R) is subjected to ring closure with sodium amide and/or sodium-arylamide of formula II in the presence or absence of an inert solvent to give an indole substituted by alkyl groups at the 3- to 7-positions of formula III. The raw material can be readily obtained by heating a mixture of an arylamine formic acid in the presence of a catalytic amount of boric acid in high yield. The by-product amine can be easily recovered and reused. Distillation of the reaction product permits a high purity ≥99.
USE: An intermediate for the synthesis of varoius organic compounds.
