Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an organic dinitrile compound, in high yield, by reacting an organic dibasic acid with ammonia in the presence of zinc oxide as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An organic dinitrile compound of formula II, e.g. sebacodinitrile, is prepared by reacting an organic dibasic acid of formula I (n is 6W10) with ammonia in the presence of zinc oxide as a catalyst. The reaction is carried out by adding zinc oxide to the molten compound I, and introducing ammonia to the mixture with stirring, at pref. 250W280°C. The by-production of tarry material is remarkably reduced, and a high-purity dinitrile compound can be prepared.
