Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound, a raw material for intermediates for fluorescent brightening agents, in high yield without clogging the gas inlet, by reacting p-nitrotoluene containing a specific amount of fuming sulfuric acid with a highly conc. gaseous sulfuric anhydride.
CONSTITUTION: 3W20 parts by wt., preferably 5W8 parts by wt., of conc. or fuming sulfuric acid is dissolved in 100 parts by wt. of p-nitrotoluene (T). A mixture of gaseous sulfuric anhydride and an inert gas is introduced into T. at 50W130°C, preferably at 70W100°C, with stirring to give p-nitrotoluenesulfonic acid. The concentration of the gaseous sulfuric anhydride is 20W90 vol.%, preferably 30W70 vol.%, and its amount is 1.0W1.2 moles per mole of T.
