Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled substance useful as a raw material of organic synthesis, in high yield, by the addition reaction of formaldehyde with CO and water or alcohol in the presence of a catalyst comprising copper carbonyl or silver carbonyl, under low temperature and pressure.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of the titled substance by the addition reaction of formaldehyde with CO and water or alcohol, copper carbonyl or silver carbonyl is used as a catalyst. Said carbonyl compound can be obtained by dissolved copper powder, a univalent copper compound, an equimolar mixture of copper powder and a bivalent copper compound, or a silver compound such as silver oxide, in a concentrated solution of a strong acid (e.g. BF3.water complex, HF, sulfuric acid, etc.), and introducing CO gas into the solution. Pref. formaldehyde is added to the catalyst solution thus prepared and CO gas is introduced into the mixture to proceed the addition reaction, and the addition product is treated with water or alcohol to obtain the objective compound. The CO pressure is 1W10atm, and the reaction temperature is 0W50°C.
